How To Defeat Shao Kahn In Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks

  • This is a strategy guide on how to beat the final battle in Mortal Kombat against Shao Kahn as Raiden. This strategy guide assumes the player is on the norma.
  • Brothers of Shadow are the second hardest enemy in the game as far as I can tell (the first hardest being Shao Kahn himself), because of their means of attack. A Fatality or Multality is the single best way to deal with them, but it takes luck to hit them all at once with a Multality like I did here.

Mortal Kombat 2 arcade game

At the main menu, hold L2 and press Square, Up, Down, Right, Left, R2, Square to unlock the classic Mortal Kombat 2 arcade game in the Kontent menu. If you entered the code correctly, you will hear a sound. Alternately, successfully complete all five Smoke missions. Note: This feature is not available in the European version of the game.

Play as Scorpion

At the main menu, hold L2 then press Square, Up, L1, R1, Left, Right, Square to unlock Scorpion in Single Player, Co-Op, and Versus modes. If you entered the code correctly, you will hear a sound. Alternately, successfully complete the game with Liu Kang to unlock Scorpion in Single Player and Co-Op mode. To unlock Scorpion in Versus mode, in the Foundry area, follow the pathway downstairs to the left of the save point. Two archers will break through the wall. Throw one at the wall to the left of the doorway to break it open, giving you access to a hidden room full of lava and a Ying Yang on a ledge. Grab one of the archers and throw him into the lava. Then, double jump off his back to get the Ying Yang that unlocks Scorpion in Versus mode.

Play as Sub-ZeroHow To Defeat Shao Kahn In Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks

At the main menu, hold L2 then press Square, Down, Up, L1(2), Up, Square to unlock Sub-Zero in Single Player, Co-Op, and Versus modes. If you entered the code correctly, you will hear a sound. Alternately, successfully complete the game with Kung Lao to unlock Sub-Zero in Single Player and Co-Op mode. To unlock Sub-Zero in Versus mode, take the boat ride across blood lake. You can find Sub-Zero's Versus mode icon in back of the lion-like statue to your left (when facing the big door). Run along the wall and double jump at the end to collect it.

Play as Baraka

In the Soul Tomb Portal, go to the area where you must wall climb. You will see a path that leads to the left and one that leads to the right; take the path to the right. There will be a statue on the path; use the Fist of Ruin to break it. Continue along the path and use the long jump ability to cross the gap and get the Koin to unlock Baraka in Versus mode.

Play as Johnny Cage

Get to the area in the Wu-Shi Academy where everything is burning. Go to the extreme right of the gate, then jump onto the roof of the house. Run to the right and jump to reach a new platform with a boulder blocking your way. Collect the Koin to unlock Johnny Cage in Versus mode.

Play as Kitana

In the Mortal Kombat 2 arena level (just before the portal with the two statues in front of it) in the Evil Monastery, you will find a number of pillars. Jump on the half broken pillar, then double jump on the roof. Collect the Koin to unlock Kitana in Versus mode.

Play as Noob Saibot

Have a match in Versus mode with Sub-Zero vs. Sub-Zero. Player one will be Sub-Zero, and player two will be Sub-Zero's brother, Noob Saibot.

KombatPlay as Reptile

Go to the section after the Brotherhood Of Shadow in Living Forest. Long Jump across the gap with the small waterfall, then go through the door. Get the clay statues to come to life, then destroy their shield. Get one of them near the giant stone column on the other side of the stream, near where you entered. Throw the clay statue into it and it will fall. Return to where the little waterfall was located and get the Koin to unlock Reptile in Versus mode.

Easy health

If you use a save point, your health will be fully restored, even if you do not save.

Easy experience

It is possible to get all the experience needed to get all the moves at the beginning of the game. After you fight your way through the start and cross the first pit, you will be in a room with a lamp hanging from the ceiling. In the next room, you will first see a quick intermission sequence of the Oni killing one of their own. Afterwards, you must fight them. Raiden will tell you to throw one of the enemies through the wall to progress. Do not break the wall. Instead, keep killing the Onis, which will keep appearing. Try to get a high combo score to get more points. If your combos are high and you perform a fatality, you will get a little bonus experience. To speed up the process, pay attention to the top left where your combo count is displayed. If at anytime you see 'Toasty', instead of 'Impressive', 'Outstanding', etc., press Start to get an extra 1,000 experience points. Keep repeating this to master all your moves very fast.

About half way through the Wu Shi Academy, you will have to get a weapon to cut the ropes to three cauldrons. Johnny Cage will be fighting with you and three Tarkatans will appear. The Tarkatans will keep respawning until the ropes to the three cauldrons are cut. Keep killing the Tarkatans to get an unlimited amount of experience. You can also keep killing the Tarkatans with either of the two weapons that you can pick up, and once the weapon disappears, it will respawn again at the same location.

When you reach a multiple of 10 in your combo meter, the announcer will say comments like 'Outstanding!', 'Superb!', etc.; however, the word 'Toasty!' will be spoken at random times. When 'Toasty!' is spoken, press Down + Start to get an extra 1,000 experience points. If done correctly, the screen will flash and 'TOASTY! 1000 Pts.' will be displayed.

Easy Test Your Might

Instead of only tapping X, tap X + Square to make the Test Your Might segments much easier.

Fight against Ermac

In the Warriors arena during one of the Smoke missions, interact with the mysterious warrior on the left three times. You will then fight Ermac. Note: You can do this at any time.

Fight against Kano

Just before you fight Shao Khan towards the end of the game, Kitana is in the right cell walking back and forth. Talk to her about four times until guards appear. Fight and defeat them, then go in the entrance that the guards came out of. You will find Jax and fight Kano.

Fight against Mileena

Note: You must first have the Swing ability. Go to the Living Forest area. At the first save point, there should be tree branches. Swing around this area somewhere until you get to a tree. Climb up it with the Wall Climb. After long bridges with lots of challenges, you will finally find Mileena and fight her.

Defeating Baraka

Baraka has four strategies while fighting. The first is just a basic one-on-one fight. Use your best combos and juggles, but do not keep him in the air too long or he will strike you with his blades and knock you back. After fighting awhile, and when you damage him enough, a short intermission sequence will start, showing Baraka freeing some monks and lighting them on fire. He will then throw two monks at you that run around on fire. Do not get too close to them and pick them off. This will give you a small amount of health. Keep battling Baraka as before. Eventually, another intermission sequence will begin. After it ends, you must fight a projectile battle with Baraka. Use your hat as Kung Lao, your fireballs as Liu Kang, and keep moving and evading. This round will not too long. Once you have damaged him enough, you will see the last intermission sequence. Baraka will go berserk and gives you access to two weapons, which you will need to use against him. Pick up the weapon closest to you and start hacking away at Baraka. Note: You cannot block while holding your weapon. When he is sufficiently damaged, a Test Your Might will occur, and you must win to stun Baraka. While he is stunned, impale him on your sword. Next, pick up the other sword, damage him, and repeat the above steps. After you impale him the second time you can use your fatality and finish him.

Defeating the Orochi Hellbeast

This trick requires a full level 3 fatality meter. As soon as the battle begins, approach one of the Tarkatans (or Demon Generals if you are fighting the one in the Foundry). Hit them with the Fatality Stunner and perform a Brutality. While in Brutality mode, keep attacking the Hellbeast with quick attacks to deal lots of damage to it. It will be dead within a few seconds.

Santa Claus and other flying objects in The Pit

At Goro's layer, just before you see Reptile, stand by the lion and look at the moon. Wait a short time to see Santa Claus and his reindeer, a witch, and a rocket ship. There is about a one minute delay between each of them.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day reference in Netherrealm

As soon as you defeat Inferno Scorpion, he will be pulled down by Hell's Skeletons. As soon as he get burned to his head, he will put his thumb up. In Terminator 2 the T-101 wants John and Sarah Conner to burn him in lava, then puts his thumb up as soon as his head is under lava. Midway also produced the arcade game Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Wrong dialogue

At the beginning of the game when Johnny Cage says 'Liu, this way', if you are someone else besides Liu Kang he will still say it.

Liu Kang's mouth remains open

After Liu Kang uses his fireball to finish his opponent in Versus mode, his mouth remains open throughout his winning pose and speech.

Living Tree hints in Living Forest

You must find the three hints before you can enter the door with a Snake Head. To find them, grab and throw an enemy into the mouth of the Living Tree (big tree with a face). There are three Living Trees in the Living Forest. The first is before the statue that you can save on. The second is beside the door on the map where you can find Reptile's Yingyang. The third is on the right side of the door with the Snake Head.

Finding Smoke in Living Forest

Go to the second door guarded by the living clay statues, the one after the thin river and next to the grappling living tree. Destroy the soldiers' shield first and throw them into the sealed tomb door. Go through the opening and follow the path to find Smoke, who will issue five missions for you to complete. Once you have completed a mission, return to Smoke and he will issue the next one.

Smoke mini-missions

Destroy a statue in Wu-Shi Academy and enter the Warrior Shrine. The Warrior Shrine is at the very start of the Wu-Shi area.

Break the walls in the Soul Tombs to reveal a secret fatality. This is an area with spikes on the ceiling and about six Tarkata in the room. You can see out on the far side of the room and you need to break the four center sections of the wall.

Offer thee Sacrifices in the Sacrifice Room in Soul Tombs. You must go through the room that does not have a green or red symbol above it. Then, do air throws to get the Tarkatas into the spiked areas.

Find all Purple Portals and throw an enemy into each one to unlock the portal. There are only two portals to throw mobs into (one near the Evil Monastery and the other at the lower level near the climbing spot).

To unlock the Pit II, enter the portal and survive in the frozen peaks. After you enter the portal, keep killing the enemies that appear until you are told that you have won.

Game mistakes

During the opening sequence, you will see Lui Kang and Kung Lao fall through the floor into Goro's lair. If you are playing as either Scorpion or Sub-Zero, you would not have fallen through the floor, however when the sequence ends, you are falling with Kung Lao. Raiden then looks to you and says 'You won the first Mortal Kombat tournament', yet neither Scorpion or Sub-Zero won.

While playing as Scorpion, you can be damaged by being set on fire. This makes no sense, as many of the moves Scorpion does involves lighting the opponent on fire. In excess, if you light an opponent on fire with one of your moves, by standing too close to them, you will be lit on fire.

While playing as either Scorpion or Sub-Zero in Story mode, there are often plot holes due to your character selection. For example, if you are playing as Sub-Zero, you will encounter Sub-Zero fighting Scorpion and they will go through a portal. When the intermission sequence ends, you are not chasing after Scorpion.

While playing as either Scorpion or Sub-Zero in Story mode, you will always be teamed with Kung Lao. The only difference between playing as an unlocked character and Liu Kang is a simple grunt. Every character will call you Liu Kang, and whenever your character speaks, he will speak with Liu Kang's voice. When you go to fight Scorpion or Sub-Zero, there is no plot change. You could, in essence, fight Scorpion while playing as him, and fight Sub-Zero using Sub-Zero. Every character in the game will simply recognize you as Liu Kang. It is as if you're still playing with Liu Kang, with just a different look and set of moves.

Concept art in Goro's Lair (Demo version)

On the bridge near the end if you jump off the left side you will land on a platform which will unlock a new concept art. On the bridge, at the end will be a golden Dragon Koin. Use a projection attack to receive another new concept art. A notification will appear when you have hit it correctly.

Developers in The Pit (Demo version)

In the spike pit, the heads that are stuck on the spikes are those of the game's developers.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is hands down the best 'Mythologies' title in the MK Universe. After having two rather poor spin offs (Sub-Zero and MK: Special Forces), it seemed as if MK could only do well in it's core series.. until now.
MK: Shaolin Monks is a re-telling of Mortal Kombat 2, through the eyes of Kung Lao and Liu Kang. The game starts at the end of MK 1 and runs all the way up to the climatic finish where you battle the great Shao Kahn. Along the way you will utilize the game's somewhat unique combat engine, which is basically a hybrid of a platformer like Devil May Cry and the MK 'Kombat' engine. What is so great about it though is that it is not stiff like the 'Kombat' engine, and allows pretty much free movement. You still have 'kombos' and special moves, but they are all easy to execute and chain together, giving even a novice player an easy chance to get in the game and start kicking butt. You also have the ability to pull off fatalities on just about every enemy (even bosses, when you beat them!)
The game also features an 'RPG' like experience point system, which you can manipulate heavily depending on how good you get at killing enemies and keeping your combos going without getting knocked down. As long as you keep hitting enemies and killing them, your combo will increase. With each kill or 10 hits, you receive a multiplier point. After your combo ends, the points you earned depending on a number of factors, including your combo and kills, are multiplied. You then receive experience points based on that multiplication. The experience points then can be used to purchase new moves and combos in the status screen. The only downside to this though is the fact that the game has only so many combos and moves to purchase. You will easily have purchased every move available well before the game is over (for me, it was half way before the game was complete!)
The graphics for MK: Shaolin Monks are kind of bad in places (especially in the cinematic cut scenes everyone pretty much has the same face!) The in-game graphics are good though for the most part, although they seem gritty and un-finished in places. The dynamic lighting and the blood makes up for it though.. if you like your violence red.
Sound-wise, MK: Shaolin Monks is like any other MK game. The soundtrack is not at all that impressive, but it fits the atmosphere of the game, especially in the areas that are straight out of MK 2. The only qualms with the game's sound are probably with it's voice acting.. but we'll get into that further in a bit.
The story telling of MK:Shaolin Monks is another hamper on the game. While the game features some great MK action and appearances from just about everyone's favorite characters, the way they appear (or die) is somewhat non-sensual at times. Also, with the way certain things happen in the game, you will be left with your head scratching, wondering if you recall things being that way in MKII's story. To top it off, the game has some really BAD voice acting (best example is Shao Kahn.. instead of using the MK announcer voice, they used some other random voice.)
Despite the shoddy voice acting and rather butchered storyline, MK:Shaolin Monks is still the best MK spin-off game to date. It features a combat engine that is arguably better than the regular MK fighting engine, and it gives the gamer more things to do (tons of stage kills and environmental manipulations.) You also have a couple secret characters to unlock, as well as plenty of extra 'kontent' to find along the way (including a hidden port of the arcade version of Mortal Kombat II!) MK: Shoalin Monks is highly recommended for any MK fan or just about any action/platformer fan.Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks Circa 2005
GOOD:
Lots of combat in a Devil May Cry style, which is challenging but not too easy or too difficult (for most video gamers)
Two players Co-op, now you and a friend can beat the game together (actually it's more fun that way)
Cool combos and fighting moves help make sure the game doesn't get stale (beat the snot out of enemies and even use weapons as well the environment to defeat enemies)
This game even has a versus mode (which plays sort of like power stone)
Plenty of unlockables
BAD:
Graphics are sub-par, but okay (similar to Blood Owen 2)
Some parts of the game can be annoying (like some puzzles or cheap enemies)
When you unlock other characters in the game (like Sub-Zero and Scorpion) and play as them, you still get the same story (involving Lu Kang and Kung Lao)
Some unlockable content is really difficult to get
Might be too Bloody or violent for some people
IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
This game (like all Mortal Kombat games) is pretty bloody and gory, so I would suggest it's not for small kids or people sentient to that sort of stuff
Simple combos strikes and small puzzles like Devil May Cry or God of War make up most of the combat, but unlike God of War or Devil May Cry these combos can be teamed up with a second player (on Co-Op mode) to take the damage to another level
You have to unlock most of the game through hidden secrets hidden in each stage
A must play for die-hard Mortal Kombat fans
GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
God of War
Devil May Cry
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero
Final Fight
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
There are some nice unlockables in this game including a full version of the classic Mortal Kombat 2
This Story fills the gap from Mortal Kmobat to Mortal Kmobat II
This is the third Action/Adventure game set in the Mortal Kmobat universe, the first was Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, the second was Mortal Kombat: Special Forces (staring Jax)

Honest reviews on Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks - PlayStation 2

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, is the new MK game on store shelves. I myself usually purchase MK merch when it drops, so I thought i'd give this game a try without even bothering to rent it first. And in a small way, i'm relieved that it didn't disappoint too much.
MKSM is by far probably the goriest Mortal Kombat in the series, to date. So if you're looking for a game full of blood and guts, this game is right up your alleyway. It also strays away from the norm, of the MK genre. It isn't a fighting game. It's an action/adventure game, with somewhat of a comparison to God of War, and Devil May Cry. Though gorier than DMC, it isn't quite as fun as DMC. As per God of War..it beats both of these games, hands down.
Anyways..yeah. This is a game full of violence, bloodshed, fatalities (ten per character), multalities (fatalities that kill multiple enemies on screen), and ofcourse, brutalities. Brutalities are basically the same as multalities, but the screen doesn't fade during brutalities, and you're actually able to control your character while doing them.
The storyline of MKSM is pretty much that of MK2, but..the events that lead up to it, and a few events DURING it. Such as the final boss fight (wont give anything away).
Like all games though, MKSM comes with a few (minor, and at times major) flaws.
-The battleing is pretty..repetative and at times, aggrovating and boring.
-The game itself is extremely short, clocking in at about 10 hours of gameplay (maximum), if you're experienced enough.
-Some of the puzzles in the game will annoy the living crap out of you.
-Fatality and multality sequences all happen in the same position (infront of the enemy), and never with the actual stage scenery in the background (the screen just turns black and that move is done..just like in the past 2 PS2 MK games).
-The game secrets (such as unlocking the MK2 fighting game) are at times, really hard to get, and MOST require ko-op gameplay to obtain.
-The characters at times can look really choppy (not alot, but you can really notice it, after comparing the Tarkatan warriors to other character models such as Kitana. Kitana looks better, whereas the Tarkatan warriors look like crap.)
-And to top it all off..the voice acting in the cutscenes is horrible. Cheesy as all hell. Even some of the dialogue itself is pretty stupid and pointless.
But despite all these flaws, I found Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, to be a pretty enjoyable game. It sure isn't the BEST beat em up action/adventure game on the market (I leave that title to God of War), but it's still a pretty enjoyable game nonetheless, if you're a fan of the MK series.
In the end, i'd only suggest this as a buy, to dedicated MK fans that have to have everything MKwise. Otherwise, only rent this to see if it suits your tastes.

Mk9 Shao Kahn

By the way, this game is TEN TIMES better than the 2 absolutely disgraceful action/adventure MK titles that came before it, 'Mytholigies: Sub-Zero', and 'Special Forces.' Those sucked, and weren't enjoyable in the least. Whereas 'Shaolin Monks' proves enjoyable.
Give it a try..judge it for yourself.

How To Defeat Shao Kahn In Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks Mortal Kombat

I give MKSM 4/5 stars, due to the flaws the game contained that didn't seem to really effect the fun factor of the game at all. If the fun factor would've been effected, i'd have only given this game 3/5 stars.
