This is the season where the genre of Horror Comedies are at peak. Its popularity is such that the artists and directors of more star value choose to implement a project of the same sort. None other than anything, we are referring to Venkat Prabhu‘s Massu Engira Masilamani @ Massu.

Without any further delay, lets move on to its storyline. It is nothing but the superpower, a human gets to see, interact, and help kind hearted ghosts. Doesn’t this one liner sound different for a horror comedy? Is this not enough for the entire two and a half hours?

Talking about the artists, Massu has Surya in dual role (Masilamani and Shakthi), Premji, as Masilamani’s friend, has a considerable screen space and does a neat job. In addition, Parthiban and Pranitha (Saguni fame) give extended cameo appearances. One gets a feel that Nayanthara, who is supposed to be the heroine, is also in a cameo role. Surya‘s performance during critical scenes, the portrayal of ghosts interacting with a human, the funny moments associated with it (thanks to Karunas, Sriman, Brahmanandam, Rajendran, and Shanmuga Sundaram for adding a lighthearted flavor), the Sri Lankan Tamil accent of Shakthi, and the surprising interval block, creates a good and effective impression about the movie and increases expectation about the rest of the film. But unfortunately, the cliched post interval sequences with an ineffective and an unnecessary villain (Samuthirakani) lets us down.

Like other Venkat Prabhu films, Massu also has references, dialogues, and BGMs from many other movies. But in Massu, one can say that the saturation level had been almost reached. Vaaranam Aayiram, Engeyum Eppothum, Kaththi, Mankatha, Goa, Veeram, and the list goes on. Moreover, one gets reminded of the director’s previous ones, when the faithful Aravind Akash, woozy Vijay Vasanth, and non – human Jai appear on screen.

Switching over to the technical side, Yuvan Shankar Raja‘s music and BGM doesn’t allow one to find faults even though the output doesn’t sound like the one from a Venkat Prabhu – Yuvan combo. R. D. Rajasekar’s cinematography is saving the film in many places and enhances its quality to an extent. When it comes to Venkat Prabhu films, one always looks for sleek and stylish editing. Getting reminded of the cuts in Mankatha trailer now. Editor Praveen‘s editing is just for a film like Massu. The crew could have concentrated more on the CG and VFX portions as it failed to create impact in few places.

The well executed horror comedy in the first half could have been extended to the second half as well, in order to make Massu as Venkat Prabhu’s best. After a point of time, one gets confused on whether the movie is a horror comedy or a usual revenge story with ghosts coming out after the soul departs. In fact, the villain domination and payback portions are so outdated that they take the viewers back to the 90s era of commercial cinema.

With all the above positives and negatives, Massu seems to be a slight bounce back for the hero as well as the director, as their previous films didn’t do well. Maasu Engira Masilamani @ Massu (A Venkat Prabhu Sixer) – The ball pitches before the boundary line. 5/10

Screenplay and scripting

Massu Engira Masilamani Tamil Movie Online

Despite a relatively slow start to the film that is hardly a dull moment from the opening to closing credits. There are any references to films, old and new, and somebrilliantly satiristic lines and scenes. Venkat Prabhu has kept his audience fully engaged with many twists and surprises and still managing to infuse elements of comedy, drama, romance, the supernatural and action. The film also touches on various pertinent social issues.

Soundtrack and Music

Yuvanshankar Raja’s background score is top notch but his songs fall way below expectations. With the exception of the title song, the only other memorable song is Poochaandi.

Cinematography

R.D. Rajasekar’s cinematography was, for most of the film, very impressive but I didn’t quite understand the techniques used in the initial ship scenes.

Direction

Venkat Prabhu clearly did not set out to make a landmark exploratory or experimental film. Instead he has created a family film designed to provide escapist entertainment. I do, however, think that an all-ages rating was generous.
